One Word Project

The One Word Project, or One Word Challenge, prioritizes student-oriented and student-directed goal setting with sustained support and consideration.

For an ice-breaker or activity warm-up, ask students to compose their own One Word Project — responding to the prompt: 

North Carolina calls us  “to be, rather than to seem." What do you want to be? Why?

Depending on your class’s comfort level, you could display their words across the room and encourage students to refer back to them throughout the semester/year.
